Back at the library on a Sunday afternoon, and with only one small ship in town today, the Internet connection is pretty good. The library is the only free WiFi spot that I know of, so when there's lots of ships and people here, the Internet speed slows to sludge. The next bunch of pictures are from the second half of my train ride, and the scenery is from Fraser to Skagway.
The U.S. / Canadian border at the top of the White Pass.
One of two tunnels on the Alaska side of the White Pass.
Yesterday, the girls headed for the water at Long Bay, and I headed for the mountains. There's a trail that leads up to Lower Dewey Lake, that's situated on a bench about 500 feet up from the town. It's a pretty steep hike, but the scenery at the top is worth the effort. Going up is all cardio, and coming down is all legs, which are a little bit on the sore side today.
The original dam was built in 1899, and is still part of the water system in Skagway.
Lower Dewey Lake
I think these kids were going to jump, but I got tired of waiting.
We were planning on leaving this weekend, but still no mail. Marc forwarded a priority package 14 days ago, and most likely due to all of the problems at the Skagway Post Office, it's still not here, or more probably it is. I have a tracking number, and according to USPS, it arrived here 4 days ago. There may be a disturbance at the post office when they open tomorrow, as someone is about to "go postal".
