Today is the 2nd rodeo performance of 6, with the last competition, and the end of the rodeo on next Sunday. Starting tomorrow, there will be 3 days of what is called "Slack Competition". The slack days are mostly the timed events like calf roping, steer wrestling, and barrel racing. In order to narrow the number of contestants for the actual rodeo performances, the slack days are kind of like qualifying at a motor sports event. The contestants with the better times, make their way into the performances, where they have an opportunity to earn a pretty good paycheck.
Our sales yesterday were 25% better than last years opening day, and the best we've had in at least the last 6 years. Jim, pictured above with Patty, is here through today, before he heads up to Phoenix to manage the NHRA Drag Race merchandise sales at Firebird Raceway. It's a good thing he had planned on being here for a couple of days, because when we discovered that our sales scanners were not in the trailer, he coordinated an overnight delivery from Indianapolis, and then had to reprogram the scanners when they arrived. All of that was way above my pay grade, and his presence made that potential disaster just a small bump in the road.
The view out of our trailer, toward the grandstands and the arena.
