Pronounced Ya Queen Uh, this peninsula north of Newport, is where one of Oregon's coastal lighthouses is located. At just under 100 feet to the top, it is the tallest, and one of the most visible from the coastal highway. We spent some time yesterday not only at the lighthouse, but at the visitor's center, and at an accessible tidal cove below the lighthouse.
The Yaquina Head Lighthouse sits at the end of a peninsula, that sticks out approx. 1 1/2 miles from the mainland.
The picture of Patty and I, at the beginning of the blog, was taken at this same location, on a much cooler, and windier day, back in 2010. Patty's brother Michael used that picture when he designed the Travel By Chance front page. This picture, taken by Nancy, may replace that photo at some future date.
The makeup of this tidal cove changes dramatically, depending on whether you're there at low, or high tide. During our brief visit, the tide had just passed the high mark, and I would imagine, much of the water is gone during low tide. We'll have to get back there at low tide to check out the difference.
Looking north from near the lighthouse.
This rock island is just out from the tip of Yaquina Head, and was covered with shore birds.
Today is Sunday, which means I'll be pretty close to the tube, and all of the racing action. Not sure what the girls are up to, but I wouldn't be at all surprised if the word shopping, or quilts has something to do with their itinerary.
Just North of the lighthouse is a Motorcoach RV Park called Pacific Shores. When we first came to Newport, we stayed at the Park because we were members of Outdoor Resorts. The days we were at the Park, never saw the lighthouse from the Park...always fogged in. Just before leaving the fog cleared and whala the lighthouse. Lynn Cross
ReplyDeleteYou can walk down to the beach from Pacific Shores and see the lighthouse from a different perspective. I have some beautiful pictures of it and all the others we saw on the coast.
