We started the morning in a light rain, but decided if we were going to take the ferry to Friday Harbor, and San Juan Island, yesterday was the day. Even though it was Thursday, the ferry was full, as lots of folks were headed to the islands, and the 4th of July weekend. It's a little over an hour from the Anacortes Ferry Terminal, to Friday Harbor on San Juan Island. We drove the car so that we could better explore the island, and not be limited to just walking around the town near the ferry terminal. The photo above, shows us driving onto the ferry at Anacortes. The photo below, is leaving a stop at Lopez Island.
The picture immediately below, shows our jeep in line at the Friday Harbor Ferry Terminal, waiting for the return trip to Anacortes. We drove a clockwise loop around San Juan Island, stopping first at Lime Kiln Lighthouse, pictured below. This location, on the western side of the island, is supposed to be the best place for viewing whales. The volunteer at the lighthouse said that there was a small pod of Orcas heading south toward our location, but he didn't know if, or when they might arrive. We enjoyed the fantastic view across the straight to Vancouver Island, but decided not to wait for the whales, that might not show up. Our next stop was at Roche Harbor on the north end of the island, where we had a nice lunch overlooking the million dollar yachts, and the beehive of activity surrounding the marina. After lunch, we walked down onto the marina, and checked out some of these water RV's, some of which were for sale. The cheapest one I saw was listed at 1.7 million, and the price went up from there. Not exactly in our budget!
Roche Harbor is definitely an upscale destination, whether you are staying in the hotel, a B&B, or one of the mega bucks vacation homes. As intriguing as life might be on one of these water RV, mega yachts, I think I like my motor home, and all of the destination possibilities it offers, on dry land. The photo below, shows the Hotel at Roche Harbor. When we completed the loop around the island, we were back at Friday Harbor about an hour before the 4:50 return trip to Anacortes. It was a great day exploring some of San Juan Island, and we even got a little bit of afternoon sun before we drove back on the ferry.
